Recently I took on a big project. Luke’s great aunts gave us a quilt top this last Christmas and now I’ve taken on the mission to hand quilt it. After a week of serious quilting I’ve been slacking this week to work on humane society t-shirt designs. I’m really excited about this project because I hope that it can help out with fundraising– they need it!

I’m planning to update a bit more often as I get  work done. I do update my running page about every week.

A major icestorm has hit Kentucky and most of Danville has been without power since Tuesday afternoon- It’s now Friday morning. My house is 40 degrees. Luke and I abandoned ship on Wednesday morning but left the cats. They seem to be handling it fine but I think they miss us. We check on them 2-3 times a day. We are staying at the college… it’s not really fun. I miss preparing fresh foods– not sure I can take another night of peanut-butter sandwiches and canned soup. The worst part is that on Tuesday or Wednesday morning the water was turned off because the water-plant apparently doesn’t have a good backup plan if the power goes out. The water is on now but there’s a boil water advisory. I dream of something delicious to eat… a pot of coffee… and some homemade cookies. AND THEN a long winter’s nap in my own bed with the electric blanket going full blast (I do realize I said coffee and sleep). Mr. Kentucky Utilities Man I will massage your stinky feet for some electricity to my house.

The key to making resolutions is making sure that they are truly attainable. I could say this year I want to get a better job, but the reality is that a goal that is never ending– that’s my goal all the time– so what’s the point of putting that on my list?

My Resolutions are simple this year:

1. Watch more old movies: I’ve become really interested in “westerns” since traveling out west… but I’m not limiting myself to westerns.

2. If it really is looking like I might be staying at my job this summer. I think I might try volunteering up at the hospital here. It’s close to work. I’m not sure what type of volunteer work I would want to do but I think if I have extra time I should use it a little more wisely.

3. By the end of the year my goal is to produce at least one new body of art work (body= 5 finished pieces).

4. This summer (as long as my knees say so) I want to participate in the Wilderness Trace 5k “Serres”. I would run 5 5ks in the course of about 4 months. My personal goal is to run a 5k under 22 minutes.

I’m sure I will think of more. These four resolutions are the big ones I think I can truly commit to.

Every year Luke’s office does a White Elephant Game at the Christmas party. The last couple of years we’ve written little “witty” books to go along side the unusual gifts, but this year we decided to try our hand at a game. It’s called Working for the Weekend. The gameboard is pretty much a desk calendar mock up– each hour is a game square. Rolling the dice you advance to different spaces. Some spaces require you to draw cards that talk about various events that have happened over the year and whether you move forward or backwards. It was mostly hand drawn and colored.

It’s that time of the year. Going to the store now means a blast of heated air that’s too dry and Christmas decorations. Luke and …

It’s that time of the year. Going to the store now means a blast of heated air that’s too dry and Christmas decorations. Luke and I made our Wal-Mart “weekend-trip” only to find that there are Christmas trees up and “Seasons Greeting” signage already on display. All shopping centers, I feel, are guilty for their jump on the Christmas season. It feels wrong to receive junk-mail promotions colored in green, red, and snow before Halloween is over. This year, I know, people are thinking about Christmas earlier because they are worried about finances, but this seems a bit too early for decorations. It seems too early when the TV tells me that I have 64 days and counting to get all my holiday shopping done.

Thanksgiving and Christmas sort of go hand in hand. I think it is human to be excited for the next big holiday– especially after half a year of boring holidays (Labor day should not be considered a holiday– does everyone get the day off? You might as well say Saturday is a holiday– which it sort of is in our house). Anyway, my whole argument is whether or not it’s too early for stores to have Christmas goodies out. I’m not really against “Christmas Consumerism”, our economy needs all the boost it can get. I’m not for the “no buy day” (day after Thanksgiving). For many of us Christmas is the ultimate holiday– the one we look forward to all year long. Christmas means religion, Santa Claus, hot totties, parades, family, friends and PRESENTS. It’s easy to understand why it is THE Holiday of holidays. Is there any harm in stores reminding us that it is coming– even before Thanksgiving? Am I becoming some old curmudgeon who thinks that holidays come one at a time and therefore should be celebrated one at a time? It’s probably fine that everyone is talking Christmas before November has even started… the really crime? The real crime is the dry heated store that also happens to sell water at the checkout counter. meh.

So decided that I needed to run at least one more race this year. There’s a pretty casual 5k and long run called the Jackson Run… for this race you run from one Doctor’s house to another. I ran the 4.5 mile (the long run) race in 33:?? minutes. It was the first long race I’ve ever competed in. I missed the seconds and there was no official posting of time since it was a casual race. I placed first in women and 5th overall in the long run. The whole point of this post isn’t really the running… it’s what the prize was. Someone baked bread for the top prizes. I couldn’t help but think that homemade bread was the best prize I’ve seen at a race. Bread is so much different from a plastic trophy– you can eat it and it doesn’t collect dust. It makes perfect sense. Now if we can only get someone to bake some chocolate chip cookies.
