I have been working “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” this week and can’t put it down. I have never thought so much about what I am actually eating. My husband and I have been Paleo for nearly a year and a half but I haven’t thought about the changes in my body that could be happening (getting stronger). If you are not familiar with this book, Price and his Wife traveled across the world during the 1930s and 40s to research native people and their teeth. Price was a dentist and was trying to figure out why our teeth had gotten in such rough shape over the years as our society had gotten more “modern”. Price so far has concluded that a traditional diet devoid of processed flours and sugars is best to prevent dental caries and facial deformaties (in babies). This I can support since going Paleo I have yet had a cavity. I no longer eat processed foods and try to avoid sugar (I love chocolate what can I say?).

The book is “old fashioned” in some of it’s terminology but it has a lot of insight on how far we have destroyed our bodies and out children’s bodies by not eating what we were meant to eat.

Weston A. Price and Paleo are easy- but you do have to make sure your priorities are in the right place. I have found that what I care about has changed in the last year (and is still developing). I don’t care so much about having the trendiest stuff- but rather the best food. My house has no pictures on the walls and fairly cheap furniture- because those things have lost their meaning to me compared to the mountain of health I could have instead.

WAP and Paleo change the way you look at what people are eating. Watching my friends eat cake brought into work makes me want to grab them and tell them to stop right there! I know the whole argument “life’s too short to not eat cake”- but if you want to be coherent and happy at 90 you’ll put it down! The standard american diet (SAD) is a big experiment- we have not been eating this way for thousands of years to know what the consequences are. We do know in the last 100 years more people have died from cardiovascular disease and cancer than should have. The industrial food market and disease sort of go hand in hand. It seems easy to me to make the right choices.

If you haven’t read it- go to your library or go on amazon and get it now.

Critters without Litters of Mercer Co./ Harrodsburg KY was in need of a tee design for a fundraising poker run on July 9th. They were trying to find a way to incorporate their own logo into the tee shirt while still keeping it related to bikers. I developed this design from their logo, a photo of a bike and Illustrator drawing tools. The tees are printed in one color in order to save money.

As a few of you know I am working on an e-textile body of work dedicated to the electro chemical processes of the brain. I am excited about this but it has also been difficult to get going since I still have so much to learn about the brain and electricity. So here we have a detail example of a piece in progress. I first dyed my fabric with tea, painted the brain image with acrylics and then embroidered the neurons. There is much more to go and much shibori to work on (which is another reason why it has taken so long). Hopefully in the next week or two I will have more fabric ready to go and will have worked out some of the conductive thread plans for the next piece.

Since I dearly love fabric I thought I would try and incorporate some into the work– Matisse style. The fabric table cloth the cat is napping on is based on an Indian inspired scrap that I have been saving for something good. The blue background is based on a Navajo woven rug (I changed the colors). This canvas measures 18″x 24″ and has a center support on the back.

This is not complete, as the box it is presented on is not final but is a mock up.
Inside the box I have connected the wires to a solderless breadboard and a Duemilanove Arduino. Using Arduino software I wrote a basic blinking light array and the rest is history.
